The United States Navy is the naval warfare branch of the United States Department of Defense headed by the Secretary of Defense. Headquartered in the Pentagon it is the largest Naval military service and is estimated to be even larger than the next 13 navies Combined down the list after it. Besides it has the largest aircraft carrier fleet among all the other navies. The Navy is currently operating with 323,561 active duty personnel, 109,117 reserve personnel, 290 ships, 3,700+ aircraft, 10 aircraft carriers, 9 amphibious assault ships, 10 amphibious transport docks, 12 dock landing ships, 22 cruisers, 62 destroyers, 10 frigates, 4 littoral combat ships and 72 submarines.

The origin of the U.S. Navy is rooted in the Continental Navy. Continental Navy was formed during the American Revolutionary War and was disbanded after the war to officially form the U.S. Navy. Officially the Navy is active since 13 October 1775. Since its inception it has been serving the United States and now it exerts influence and have its presence all over the globe. The stated mission of the Navy is “to maintain, train and equip combat-ready Naval forces capable of winning wars, deterring aggression and maintaining freedom of the seas” the Navy is headed presently by Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus with Barack Obama as the Commander-in-Chief.
