M16 rifle is a 5.56mm caliber rifle. It is an adaption of the military of U.S. in their AR-15 rifle.
M16 is an assault rifle. This is a useful attacking weapon in the battle field. It triggers 5.56×45mm NATO cartridges at a muzzle velocity of 948 m/s. its effective killing/ defense range is 600 meter. Cyclical shooting rate is 700-950 rounds/min.
A combined labor of Eugene Stoner and L. James Sullivan resulted in M16 within the industry of Colt. Colt bought the right of AR-15 and produced M16 for the U.S. army in 1962. Although there was M14 rifle, its length and weight made it difficult to use it in the battle field. It has been officially produced from 1959 to present. About 8million M 16 rifles have already been produced by its many licensed manufacturers.
This rifle is used in many wars namely Vietnam War, Laotian civil war, Cambodian War, War of Afghanistan, Iraq war and many other wars. It is light weighted and not too long in size. These qualities make this rifle a perfect short range battle rifle.
