Headquartered in the Pentagon the Department of Defense is the organizational frontier of the U.S. Armed Forces vested with the responsibility of conducting all the U.S. military institutions, agencies and operations that are related to the national security and U.S. Armed Forces. U.S. Department the Army, Department of the Navy and the Department of the Air Force are all under the supervision of the Department of Defense. Apart from these three major departments other intelligence agencies and services of the U.S. government like the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA), the National Security Agency (NSA), the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA), and the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) also function under the Department of Defense. Besides there are other defense agencies of the government like Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA), the Missile Defense Agency (MDA), Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA), and the Pentagon Force Protection Agency (PFPA) which are also conducted and coordinated by the Department of Defense.
The U.S. Department of Defense is the largest employer of the world with its 3.2 million of total employees and is headed by the Secretary of Defense who reports directly to the President. And apart from being the largest employer of the world the Department of Defense is also the largest energy consuming defense organization of the world. The department alone consumes more energy than the whole nation of Syria.
