DARPA standing for Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency is a specially designed military agency and is a part of the U.S. department of Defense. The purpose of DARPA is to design and develop the technology needed for strengthening the Department of Defense and to fulfill the technological needs of the armed forces not only for the present but also for the future. DARPA was initiated due to the shock U.S. received after the launch of the Soviet Sputnik 1 in 1957. Its stated goal is to make and keep the U.S. as the most technological advanced in each and every military aspect both in space and in earth. Apart from that it also aims at giving technological surprise to the potential enemy states.
Initiated primarily as Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) in 1958 by the President Dwight D. Eisenhower, DARPA has been the pioneer of many advanced technologies which have become the object of daily use like computer networking, graphical user interface etc. Headquartered in Arlington, Virginia DARPA is independent from other military agencies and reports directly to the office of the Department of Defense.
Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is a special branch of the U.S. Department of defense which was formed for taking care of and boosting up technological advancements for the military services. DARPA stands for Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. It was initially named as ARPA, Advanced Research Projects Agency and was established in 1958. Headquartered in Arlington, Virginia it was initiated by the President Dwight D. Eisenhower to lead the technological frontier of the U.S. Armed forces. DARPA was the outcome of the surprise the U.S. Department of Defense experienced after the sudden launch of Sputnik 1. The Sputnik 1 definitely gave space superiority to Russia over the U.S. To prevent such future surprise and to give surprise to the potential enemy state was the primary goal of DARPA. Besides DARPA also aims at developing technology that will not only fulfill the present need but also will go far beyond into fulfilling the future needs beforehand.
DARPA has funded and developed many technologies that have now become the day to day technology of everyday life. Such as computer networking and graphical user interface etc. With Arati Prabhakar as the Agency Executive DARPA has 240 employees on average and an annual budget of 2.8 billion.
