9mm | 9mmP | 9×19mm Parabellum 7
The 9mm, also known as the 9x19mm Parabellum or 9mm Luger, is a popular German pistol round. It was designed by Georg Luger for the gun manufacturer Deutsche Waffen und Munitionsfabriken (DWM). Parabellum, when translated from Latin, means “If you seek peace, prepare for war.” This is the known motto of the DWM.
The 9mm has a flat trajectory and moderate recoil, and is considered as more lethal when travelling at longer ranges. There are many variation s of the 9mm, and this includes the 9mm NATO, which fires from a higher pressure than the standard Luger. There is also the Swedish m/39 with a bullet weight of 115 grains. An overpressure variation would be the 9x19mm +P, which fires at higher pressures than the Luger. The performance has moderately improved on the standard loads and these are usually found on jacketed hollow points.
The 9mm is currently one of the most popular cartridges used by law enforcement and military agencies around the world. In fact, it is being used by more than 60% of the US police force. This cartridge’s effectiveness in both self-defense and police use, its accessibility and affordability are some of the reasons on why it continues to be popular.
