The Ruger SR22 is a multipurpose pistol that was introduced in January 2012 by Ruger, with all-new features which are not found in its 22 Cal handgun predecessors. This pistol has received a lot of positive feedback from those who use it, and we will take a look at what makes the Ruger SR22 a great and unique weapon. We will post some comments from social media and some videos people have made on the handgun.
Not to be confused with the Ruger “SR-22” rifle, the Ruger SR22 Rimfire pistol is a versatile handgun, largely recreational, useful for plinking, target practice and it can also be serve as a small game hunting weapon. It is suited for a variety of .22 loads. The weapon is ergonomically comfortable and lightweight as well, due to its aluminum and polymer parts.
Main Features of the Ruger SR22 Rimfire Pistol
The Ruger SR22 Rimfire Pistol is a regular, full-sized pistol with an ambidextrous, manual thumb safety. The pistol is light and weighs just 17.5 ounces with equally light trigger pulls of 5.1 pounds with a single action and is approximately doubled with double action at just less than 11 pounds. The external hammer makes an easier task out of cocking and single-action shooting due to its rounded spur. Sights are both fixed and rear, backed up by a three-dot system and adjustments can be made for elevation and windage. It is possible to toggle between a solid black blade or two white dots through the reversible blade.
On the polymer frame, there are two rubberized grips that can be manually removed and replaced without using any tools. The options available on the grips are ‘slim’ and ‘palm swell’. The grip design is ergonomically sound, making the pistol comfortable to carry and use.
The Picatinny rail on the underside is easily operable, with provisions for mounting various commonly-used accessories. The slide is made of aerospace grade aluminum with serrations for an improved grip.
The barrel is composed of stainless steel and it is replaceable. The capacity of the Ruger SR22 Rimfire Pistol is 10 rounds. The weapon comes with floorplates and a soft case. The pistol comes in two different finishes – black anodized aluminum and silver anodized aluminum.

Ruger’S SR22 Press Release
Ruger put out a Press Release back in January 2012 detailing the new .22 Cal SR22 Pistol (new in 2012):
Sturm, Ruger & Company, Inc. (NYSE: RGR) is proud to announce the new Ruger® SR22™ pistol, the do-it-all .22 pistol for the shooter who appreciates style and demands reliability. The SR22 is a rugged, scaled-down version of a full-sized pistol, perfect for plinking, target shooting and small game hunting. The lightweight SR22 has modern styling and is fun to shoot while using inexpensive rimfire ammunition.
“Ruger has built a solid reputation for excellence in rimfire pistols with the Mark III™ and 22/45™ product families, and the new SR22 will contribute positively to that reputation,” said Chris Killoy, Ruger Vice President of Sales and Marketing. “This pistol is feature-packed and an incredible value – consumers won’t find a similar product with everything the SR22 offers at a comparable price. It functions with all types of .22 LR ammunition for extreme reliability; once rimfire enthusiasts pick it up, they won’t want to put it down,” he concluded.
The SR22 has light double-action and crisp single-action trigger pulls. Its external hammer is designed with a rounded spur for easy cocking and single-action shooting. The SR22 features a polymer frame and two interchangeable (no tools required) rubberized grips with angled serrations, allowing shooters to select either a slim or wider palm swell option. The aerospace-grade aluminum slide has serrations on both front and rear for better grip and slide manipulation. The easy-to-use underside Picatinny rail features multiple cross slots for variable mounting of most popular accessories.
The 3-dot sight system has a fixed front sight and a rear sight that is adjustable for both windage and elevation. A reversible blade allows shooters to select two white dots or a solid black blade. Other SR22 features include a stainless steel replaceable barrel, an ambidextrous manual thumb safety/decocking lever, ambidextrous magazine release, plus a visual inspection port to determine the load status of the pistol. The SR22 includes two finger grip extension floorplates that can be added to the magazine for comfort and grip. Each SR22 is also shipped with two 10-round magazines and a soft case.

Final Analysis of the Ruger SR22 Pistol
With the Ruger SR22, you get a handy weapon, easy to strip, load and lightweight to carry. Although this pistol shares several features with the Walther P22, it is lighter and slightly cheaper. The consensus is that the Ruger SR22 is more reliable. The exposed hammer is a feature which has been well-received. On the downside, the trigger pull is a bit heavy. The magazine disconnect function has also been complimented although there are those who are not really taken up by it. The reverse action of the safety can be confusing, but generally well-thought of due to the red mark that is visible when the safety if off. It has been called a “wonderful target pistol” by those who tested it.
The serrations on the forward cocking assembly and grips are another good aspect of the Ruger SR22. The grip makes the gun comfortably ergonomic. Added to the fact that most accessories and sights can be used on this gun, and that it is versatile with standard ammunition, makes the Ruger SR22 is a reliable and easy to use pistol.
I hope you enjoyed this Ruger SR22 Review and in the future if you are looking for a 22LR handgun, the SR22 is a great and well-respected choice.
